World’s Newest Marine Protected Area

Created in 2018, the Rapa Nui Multiple Use Marine Coastal Protected Area covers almost 300,000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean. From the near-pristine waters around Easter Island almost to the west coast of mainland Chile, the preserve safeguards marine species found nowhere else on Earth from industrial commercial fishing while allowing the ancient fishing activities of Rapa Nui.
