Marla became intrigued with Rapa Nui during her first college class at the University of Wyoming in 1969, taught by William Mulloy. She majored in anthropology and Spanish and graduated with a Master's in Linguistic anthropology , having studied in Mexico and Spain. Her thesis was on the reduplication in Rapanui language. She has taught Spanish and anthropology in Wyoming for many years.
She became a board member in 2000 and chaired the Scholarship program of the EIF for many years before becoming Vice-president. She is currently the chair of the Outreach committee and has been to the island many times. Her passion is education and helping preserve the Rapanui language and culture.
